the Features, Kings of Leon (09.08.09)

the Band: the Features, Kings of Leon
the Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2009
the Venue: Merriweather Post Pavilion (Columbia, MD)

The Features opened, but we totally missed them … traffic getting into Merriweather is such a killer. I like the Features too … bummer.

Thankfully we didn’t miss any part of the main act, the Kings of Leon. These Tennessee boys, consisting of brothers Anthony Caleb Followill (vocals/guitar), Ivan Nathan Followill (drums) and Michael Jared Followill (bass), with their cousin Cameron Matthew Followill (guitar), rocked for two full hours. They focused a lot of this time on the most recent album, Only By the Night. Even so, they played tunes from their whole catalog. This was an amazing show, one of my all time favorites. The whole show was fantastic, but for me, the best songs of the night were Taper Jean Girl, Fans, On Call, and Slow Night, So Long.

Full Setlist: Closer / Crawl / Charmer / Taper Jean Girl / Molly’s Chambers / Red Morning Light / Fans / Revelry / The Bucket / My Party / Four Kicks / Sex on Fire / Notion / Manhattan / On Call / Cold Desert / Slow Night, So Long / ENCORE / Be Somebody / Knocked Up / Use Somebody / Black Thumbnail

“This is the most fun I’ve had at a show in a long time … that means we’re going to come back real soon.” (Caleb’s words to the crowd)

Whispertown 2000, the Breeders (08.21.09)

the Band: Whispertown 2000, the Breeders
the Date: Friday, August 21, 2009
the Venue: Black Cat (DC)

Whispertown 2000 opened. They were okay.

The Breeders were the main attraction. They are nothing short of amazing. They have always put on a phenomenal show and such was the case at Friday night’s show at the Black Cat. The current members are Kim Deal (guitar, vocals), Kelley Deal (guitar, vocals), Jose Medeles (drums), Mando Lopez (bass), and Cheryl Lyndsey (guitar). Their regular bassist had to leave the tour to witness his girlfriend give birth so the band called in their original bassist Josephine Wiggs to fill in. It was a healthy dose of nostalgic awesomeness!

The Deal twins, et al. played tons of songs from the early material, maybe to be sure that Josephine would be comfortable. Whatever the reason, the crowd, myself included, absolutely loved it. Even though it was an all too brief affair, only about 65 minutes, the show was amazing. My favorites of the evening were Drivin’ on 9 (where Kelley picked up the violin), Divine Hammer, Cannonball, Saints, and Huffer.

Full setlist: No Aloha / Walk it Off / Divine Hammer / New Year / Cannonball / I Just Want to Get Along / Do You Love Me Now? / Happiness Is a Warm Gun / Iris / Fortunately Gone / Hoverin’ / Little Fury / I Am Decided / Night of Joy / Bang On / Huffer / Drivin’ On 9 / Safari / Saints / Tipp City

the Screaming Females, the Dead Weather (07.13.09)

the Venue: 9:30 Club (DC)

The Screaming Females opened. Not my cup of tea … at all.

The Dead Weather was the main attraction. The band is made up of Allison Mosshart (the Kills), Jack White (the White Stripes and the Raconteurs), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age), and Jack Lawrence (the Raconteurs) who while touring together a couple years ago, they just decided what the hell, let’s make another band.

I’ve been blown away by previous shows of the White Stripes and the Raconteurs and I’m a big fan of the Kills and Queens of the Stone Age. This show was just, um … okay. The tunes were from the Dead Weather’s debut album, Horehound. The band put forth lots of energy, but there were only a handful of songs that I really enjoyed. I wouldn’t say a full-on disappointment, but I just didn’t walk away thinking, “Wow, I can’t wait until this band comes back to town.”

Nonetheless, I'm glad NPR recorded the entire show and saved it here:  http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106385053

Full setlist: 60 Feet Tall / Bone House / Outside / So Far From Your Weapon / Cut Like a Buffalo / Forever My Queen (Pentagram cover)/ Rocking Horse / New Pony (Bob Dylan cover)/ No Hassle Night / Will There Be Enough Water / ENCORE / Treat Me Like Your Mother / Child of a Few Hours / Hang You From The Heavens

Now let me drag you by your hair ...

South San Gabriel, One (1) Baptist General, Centro-Matic (11.19.08)

the Band: South San Gabriel, One (1) Baptist General, Centro-Matic
the Date: Wed November 19, 2008
the Venue: Rock and Roll Hotel (DC)

(Photo credit to Ash Crowe and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/ashcrowe/)

South San Gabriel opened. Now, that’s a bit misleading because South San Gabriel is actually an offshoot project of the headliner, Centro-Matic. The difference here being they take four core members of Centro-Matic and add a few additional members to go for a more subdued sound. Their set was well played and a great way to start out the night.

The lead singer from the Baptist Generals, a small indie band from Centro-Matic’s hometown of Denton, Tex-ass, played solo acoustic next. Get it? He was just One (1) Baptist General. Ha! Anyways, I don’t know much about the Baptist Generals, but I like what I heard.

(Photo credit to Ash Crowe and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/ashcrowe/)

Centro-Matic took to the stage around 10:30 and played a full hour and a half. The band consists of Will Johnson (lead vocals, guitar), Scott Danbom (vocals, violin, keyboards, bass), Mark Hedman (bass, guitar), and Matt Pence (drums). These guys have been making killer music for some twelve years and they played killer music tonight.

This was probably the best Centro-Matic show I’ve seen. Will and the band were in good spirits and kept referring to their joy over the recent Obama win. Ahhh, another reason I love these guys. I feel like they played just about all of my favorites. They even performed the English Beat’s Save it for Later in their encore that took everyone by surprise and blew most of us away.

Full setlist: Love You Just the Same / Fountains of Fire / Call the Legion in Tonight / Flashes and Cables / Good As Gold / Mighty Midshipmen / The Rat Patrol and DJs / Quality Strange / I, The Kite / Covered Up in Mines / Calling Thermatico / Saving a Free Seat / Supercar / Blisters May Come / Strahan Has Corralled the Freaks /ENCORE / Save It For Later (The English Beat cover) / ?

just a reminder to all of us
that you ain’t the superstar
that we once thought you were ...

the Acorn, Calexico (11.13.08)

the Band: the Acorn, Calexico
the Date: Thu November 13, 2008
the Venue: 9:30 Club (DC)

(Photo credit to Brandon Wu and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/brandonwu/)

The Acorn opened. We missed them, but heard they put on a great show.

Calexico was the headliner. The 9:30 Club was the perfect setting for the group’s intricate music, which has been described as mariachi-punk, sepia-toned indie-rock, or desert twang. However you describe them, they are nothing short of amazing. The Tuscon-based band consists of Joey Burns (vocals, guitars), John Convertino (drums), Paul Niehaus (steel pedal guitar), Jacob Valenzuela (trumpet), Martin Wenk (trumpet), and Volker Zander (bass).

They concentrated on Carried to Dust, Calexico’s most recent release, but they were sure to play many of the fan favorites. Of all the Calexico shows I’ve seen, this was the best. The rest of the crowd seemed to love the show too. There was plenty of dancing and the gritos were howled … Aaahhhuaaaayiiii! My personal highlights of the evening were Roka, Sunken Waltz, Two Silver Trees, El Gatillo (Trigger Revisited), Alone Again Or, and the final song of the evening, Guero Canelo.

Full setlist: Sanchez / Roka / Bend To The Road / Across The Wire / Jesus and Tequila (Minutemen cover) / Writer’s Minor Holiday / Sunken Waltz / House of Valparaiso / Two Silver Trees / El Gatillo (Trigger Revisited) / Stray / Inspiracion / Cruel / Quattro (World Drifts In) / The News About William / Alone Again Or (Love cover) / Fractured Air / ENCORE / Minas de Cobre (For Better Metal) / Victor Jara’s Hands / Guero Canelo

the Date: Mon November 10, 2008
the Venue: DAR Constitution Hall (DC)

The Whigs were the first band. I totally missed their show. Bummer! I heard they were great.

Second on the bill was We Are Scientists. Despite the ambivalent response from the typical D.C. stay-in-your seat crowd, they put on a great set. I knew I liked them from seeing them a few years ago at the Black Cat. My favorite was Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt … of course.

(Photo credit to Shantel Mitchell and her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/faithdesired/)

Kings of Leon was the main attraction. The band consists of three brothers, Anthony “Caleb” Followill (vocals, guitar), Ivan “Nathan” Followill, and Michael “Jared” Followill (bass), and a cousin, Cameron “Matthew” Followill (guitar). I’ve seen them many times before and they are one of my favorite Rock ‘n Roll bands. They did not disappoint this night, these Tennessee boys were amazing! They were promoting their latest release, Only by the Night, but their set spanned all four of their albums. My favorites of the night were Closer, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, Use Somebody, On Call, Slow Night, So Long, Knocked Up, and Charmer.

Full setlist for Kings of Leon: Closer / Crawl / My Party / Razz / Molly’s Chambers / Taper Jean Girl / King of the Rodeo / Sex On Fire / Fans / Revelry / Milk / Four Kicks / The Bucket / McFearless / Use Somebody / On Call / Cold Desert / Slow Night, So Long / ENCORE / Knocked Up / Manhattan / Charmer / Black Thumbnail

I ain’t too proud to say that’s how I’m made ...

Golem, the Walkmen (09.06.08)

the Band: Golem, the Walkmen
the Date: Sat September 6, 2008
the Venue: 9:30 Club (DC)

(Photo credit to someone on the internet)

We completely missed Golem. Sorry guys. Unfortunate because we heard they were a band inspired by Eastern European and Jewish klezmer folk music.

We were there for the Walkmen. The Walkmen was formed back in 2000 by three members from Jonathan Fire Eater (Walter Martin (vocals, organ, bass), Paul Maroon (guitar), and Matt Barrick (drums)) and two from the Recoys (Hamilton Leithauser (vocals, guitar) and Peter Bauer (organ, bass)). All of the members grew up together in the Washington, D.C. area and have played in the same bands since the fifth grade! Walter and Hamilton are cousins too.

Anyways, Hamilton and the boys played a great show to this large, hometown crowd. It was a solid collection of songs that mixed classics with some of the newer tunes off of their recent release, You & Me. My favorites of the evening included What’s in It for Me?, Wake Up, Louisiana, The Rat, Little House of Savages, Long Time Ahead of Us, and In the New Year (where Hamilton's voice crescendoed into a scream in the chorus). It was just an amazing performance from a band that I love. We even had a surprise guest appearance from Peter’s little boy. Awwwww.

Full setlist: New Country / On the Water / In the New Year / Canadian Girls / Thinking of a Dream I Had / Wake Up / Long Time Ahead of Us / Donde Esta la Playa / All Hands and the Cook / Red Moon / The Rat / What’s in It for Me? / I Lost You / Louisiana / ENCORE / Four Provinces / Little House of Savages

If you don’t like it, Won’t you tell me? ...

My Morning Jacket (09.03.08)

the Band: My Morning Jacket
the Date: Wed September 3, 2008
the Venue: DAR Constitution Hall (DC)

(Photo credit to Shantel Mitchell and her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/faithdesired/)

The show marketed as “An Evening with My Morning Jacket” was just that, an entire evening with the main attraction. That was a nice change from the traditional show. I knew that I could concentrate solely on Jim James and the boys from start to finish. I would not have to watch an opener (that I’d probably never heard of) and then wait about twenty minutes while they switch out the instruments. Now I don’t have anything against sitting through the traditional opening act. In fact, I find myself discovering new music through watching the opening bands. That’s exactly how I found out about Centro-Matic … they opened for My Morning Jacket a few years back. Now, I’m a big Centro-Matic fan.

The band hails from Louisville, Kentucky and comprises Jim James (vocals, guitar), Tom “Two-Tone Tommy” Blankenship (bass), Patrick Hallahan (drums), Carl Broemel (guitar, vocals), and Bo Koster (keyboard, vocals). My Morning Jacket, or MMJ for those of us who celebrate the brevity of the blog, has a unique sound that ranges from their alt-country rock roots, full of guitar with heavy reverb (think Neil Young) to more experimental rock full of keyboards (think Prince). They are an amazing band to see live in an open air setting, like Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza.

Anyways, the Evening with My Morning Jacket was good … not great. The show was over 2.5 hours! So they deserve my praise for that alone, but to be honest, this wasn’t my favorite MMJ show of all time. Though I really like these guys, I’m just not a huge fan of their latest release Evil Urges. Many of the night’s tunes came from that album. I mean, they played nearly that entire album. Thankfully, they played tons of other songs too including some of my favorites, Off the Record, Anytime, Golden, Gideon, Lay Low and, of course, One Big Holiday. It’s also worth noting that they played Cobra, a rare tune off of the band’s Chocolate & Ice EP … that’s like a 20 minute song!

(Photo credit to Shantel Mitchell and her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/faithdesired/)

Full setlist: Evil Urges / Anytime / Off the Record / Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part 1 / Two Halves / Golden / Thank You Too! / I'm Amazed / The Way That He Sings / Sec Walkin / War Begun / Phone Went West / Cobra / Librarian / Dondante / Gideon / Lay Low / Steam Engine // Wordless Chorus / Highly Suspicious / Smokin from Shootin / Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Part 2 / Run Thru / One Big Holiday

if we holler loud and make our way
we’d all live one big holiday ...

the Warlocks, the Black Angels (07.02.08)

the Band: the Warlocks, the Black Angels
the Date: Wed July 2, 2008
the Venue: Rock and Roll Hotel (DC)

(Photo credit to tweenina and her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/tweenina/)

The Warlocks opened. We caught only part of their set. It was nice. They’re friends of my future brother-in-law’s band, the Vandelles … I think.

Anyways, the Black Angels were awesome! They’re also friends with the Vandelles … who isn’t, right? I first caught wind of this band when I started dating my fiancĂ© a few years ago. She told me about her brother being in a band and how they’re on this Psychedelica compilation CD. One of the other bands on the CD was the Black Angels. I must have listened to Black Grease a million times. We’ve seen them a few times before, including under the blazing sun at Lollapalooza 2006 and down in Austin at a small club during the Austin City Limits Festival 2006 (Austin is where they’re from by the way). Needless to say, we love ‘em!

This show did not disappoint. It was loud, pulsating, and full of energy. This little quintet from Tex-Ass is nothing short of pure psychedelic rock and roll. Many of the songs were from their recent release, Directions to See a Ghost. My favorites were Black Grease (of course), Manipulation, Doves, and The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven. I’m sure the rest of the crowd left the club as I did, with ringing ears and a grin on my face. Thank you, Black Angels … thank you.

Full setlist (as best I can figure): Manipulation / You On the Run / The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven / Mission District / Black Grease / Doves / Science Killer / Young Men Dead / Surf City (revisited) / Never/Ever / ENCORE / The Return / You in Color

TURN ON, TUNE IN, DRONE OUT (from the Black Angels’ website) ...

Pearl Jam (06.22.08)

the Band: Pearl Jam
the Date: Sun June 22, 2008
the Venue: Verizon Center (DC)

(Photo credit to Mick Arieta and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/riotonsunset/)

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists opened ... I don't know why.

Pearl Jam took the stage around nine and after they started, we never wanted them to stop. The show was spectacular! I wouldn't say that I'm the biggest Pearl Jam fan. I mean, I can't hold a candle to my best friend, Joe (of course, he may have a few restraining orders against him as a result of his obsession with Pearl Jam). I am a fan though. In so many ways, Pearl Jam defined the type of music I listened to when I was in college. I even picked up some fashion tips from Eddie ... well, I tied a flannel shirt around my waist at least. But I digress ...

Eddie and the boys played songs from the entire Pearl Jam catalog. So many of them were my favorites, including Elderly woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town, Corduroy, Daughter, Black and Rearviewmirror ... honestly, the entire show was my favorite. Amazing energy and amazing show! Solid Rock 'n Roll!

(Photo credit to syroste and his/her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/27664413@N08/)

Near the very end of the evening, Eddie introduced the newest member to the band ... Jake, who just happened to be the luckiest Pearl Jam fan in the entire world (at least for that moment). Young Jake was led to the middle of the stage, handed a guitar, shown a few chords and invited to jam with the band as they played All Along the Watchtower. Wow, talk about being in Pearl Jam Heaven!

(Photo credit to jdlynch70 and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/27879172@N04/)

Pearl Jam ended the amazing night with the ultimate fan favorite, Yellow Ledbetter ... it was fantastic.

Full setlist: Hard to Imagine / Severed Hand / Hail Hail / Do The Evolution / Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town / Evacuation / Corduroy / I’m Open / I Am Mine / I Got Id / Daughter / Light Years / Even Flow / Green Disease / You Are / U / Who You Are / Why Go / ENCORE / Comatose / Sad / Given to Fly / Come Back / Grievance / Black / Rearviewmirror / SECOND ENCORE / No More / Last Kiss / Crazy Mary / Alive / All Along the Watchtower / Yellow Ledbetter

I want to drum it all away...
