Wilco (03.30.10)

the Band: Wilco
the Date: Tuesday March 30, 2010
the Venue: Music Center at Strathmore (Bethesda, MD)

Wilco played an absolutely amazing 37-song, 3-hour long, non-stop rock show. It was beautiful.

I’ve been a huge fan of Wilco for years. The band, made up of Jeff Tweedy (vocals, guitar), John Stirratt (bass), Nels Cline (guitar), Glenn Kotche (drums), Pat Sansone (multi-instrumentalist), and Mikael Jorgensen (keyboard), is based in Chicago so I guess I kind of look at them as fellow Midwesterners … and for that alone, they ROCK.

Jeff joked midway through the show that “the motto for this tour is ‘Leave Them Wanting Less’ … when you leave here tonight, you will be very full.” No kidding! The show was presented in three mini-sets: an all out electric rock show … to an intimate, almost acoustic set (where the band gathered to the front of the stage which was adorned with throw rugs and floor lamps ... as if they were jamming in someone's living room) … then back to the full-blown rock show.

They played tunes from literally their ENTIRE catalog including some of the newer tunes from the most recent album, Wilco (the album), like Wilco (the song) and Bull Black Nova, as well as some older stuff like Passenger Side, Kamera and A Shot in the Arm. There were tons of highlights, including Via Chicago (where Glenn went nuts), Impossible Germany, Reservations (where Nels went nuts), Ashes of American Flags, Handshake Drugs, Heavy Metal Drummer (where the crowd went nuts), and I’m the Man Who Loves You. There was even a singalong when Jeff asked the crowd to sing Jesus, Etc. to him … we didn’t sound so great, but it was fun.

My absolute favorite moment in the night was when they played Someday Some Morning Sometime. See, long before the show, Wilco took requests via their website, WilcoWeb. I requested that song noting that it would be an early anniversary present for my wife. We married just about a year ago and used Someday Some Morning Sometime in our wedding video … we just love that sweet, sweet song. Well, when the band played that song, we knew they had heard my request. Thank you, Wilco.

Full setlist: SET 1 / Wilco (the Song) / Bull Black Nova / You Are My Face / I am Trying to Break Your Heart / One Wing / A Shot in the Arm / At Least That’s What You Said / Nothingsevergonnastandinmywayagain / Deeper Down / Via Chicago / Impossible Germany / Poor Places / Reservations / SET 2 / Spiders (Kidsmoke) / When the Roses Bloom Again / Forget the Flowers / California Stars / You and I / Kamera / Someday Some Morning Sometime (at our request!) / Laminated Cat / When You Wake Up Feeling Old / Passenger Side / Airline to Heaven / SET 3 / Ashes of American Flags / Jesus, Etc. (singalong) / You Never Know / Handshake Drugs / Theologians / Heavy Metal Drummer / Hate it Here / Walken / I’m the Man Who Loves You / Thank You Friends (Big Star cover) / ENCORE / Box Full of Letters / Hoodoo Voodoo / I’m a Wheel

I’d like to hold your hand in mine
Someday some morning sometime ...

Jay Reatard, Pixies (11.30.09 & 12.01.09)

the Band: Jay Reatard, Pixies
the Date: Monday-Tuesday, November 30 & December 1, 2009
the Venue: DAR Constitution Hall (DC)

Two full nights of my favorite band of all time, the Pixies!

This tour was to mark the 20th anniversary of their best-selling album Doolittle. The Pixies are Frank Black (a.k.a. Black Francis, a.k.a. Charles Thompson; vocals/guitar), Kim Deal (a.k.a. Mrs. John Murphy, a.k.a. Tammy Ampersand; vocals/bass), Joey Santiago (guitar), and David Lovering (drums). They are in a word, PERFECT. They started each night with the Doolittle B-Sides including Weird at My School, Bailey’s Walk, and one of my favorites, Manta Ray. The die-hard fans, like myself, loved it, but when they started into the official album with Debaser, the entire crowd absolutely lost their shit. It was magical.

Back in high school, I must have played Doolittle ten million times. Now twenty years later, I’m listening to the Pixies play the entire album LIVE! What an amazing experience. On a side-note, earlier this year, the entire Doolittle album became available on Rock Band and I will admit that I immediately downloaded these tunes and have been prepping myself just for this occasion. Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Crackity Jones, Hey, and Gouge Away … I mean the whole freakin’ album was played! The whole freakin’ show was unbelievable!

(Photo credit to Clint JCL and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/clintjcl/)

Each night they delivered two encores, including the UK Surf version of Wave of Mutilation, Gigantic, Into the White, and my all-time-favorite song, Where Is My Mind? And, depending on the night, they also played Nimrod's Son, Caribou, Vamos, Isla de Encanta, and Broken Face. We all left happy, ears ringing. The Pixies are dead, long live the Pixies!

I should also note that Jay Reatard opened both nights.  Kind of a mess, but I could see how the Pixies liked 'em.

Full setlist for November 30: Dancing the Manta Ray / Weird at My School / Bailey’s Walk / Manta Ray / Debaser / Tame / Wave of Mutilation / I Bleed / Here Comes Your Man / Dead / Monkey Gone to Heaven / Mr. Grieves / Crackity Jones / La La Love You / No. 13 Baby / There Goes My Gun / Hey / Silver / Gouge Away / ENCORE 1/ Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf version) / Into the White / ENCORE 2 / Where is My Mind? / Gigantic / Caribou / Nimrod’s Son

Full setlist for December 1: Dancing the Manta Ray / Weird at My School / Bailey’s Walk / Manta Ray / Debaser / Tame / Wave of Mutilation / I Bleed / Here Comes Your Man / Dead / Monkey Gone to Heaven / Mr. Grieves / Crackity Jones / La La Love You / No. 13 Baby / There Goes My Gun / Hey / Silver / Gouge Away / ENCORE 1/ Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf version) / Into the White / ENCORE 2 / Isla de Encanta / Broken Face / Something Against You / Vamos / Where Is My Mind? / Gigantic

HEY!  Been trying to meet you ...

Guster (10.29.09 & 10.30.09)

the Band: Guster
the Date: Thursday - Friday, October 29 & 30, 2009
the Venue: 9:30 Club (DC)

(Photo credit to Amy Willard and her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/amywillard//)

I’ve been a big fan of Guster for years. The band was formed by Adam Gardner, Ryan Miller, and Brian Rosenworcel back in 1991 while attending Tufts University. Joe Pisapia joined the band back in 2003. This current tour was in support of the 10-year anniversary of the album Lost and Gone Forever. They played two nights at the 9:30 club and luckily we picked up two-night tickets.

Basically, the shows were amazing. Each night, Guster played two sets: the first was a mix of songs from all of their albums, and the second was Lost and Gone Forever in its entirety. Both nights, the crowd was in a fantastic mood and everybody was dancing and singing along to every song. The setlist was fantastic. They played some older tracks from as far back as the Goldfly album and songs that are not even released yet. Yup, the boys played a few brand-spanking-new tunes that will hopefully make an appearance on next year’s new album.

Between the two sets, Guster played a small video showing some old footage of the band during the recording of Lost and Gone Forever. It was a nice look back at where it all began … well, at least where this particular album began.

The second set was a fun and vibrant run-thru of Lost and Gone Forever. For most of these tunes, Guster brought horn and string players on stage to enhance the sound. On both nights, for All the Way Up To Heaven, a small children’s choir came on stage to perform harmony and whistle. Also on each night, Guster closed the show with a completely unplugged version of Jesus on the Radio.

Full setlist for October 29: SET ONE / The Captain / One Man Wrecking Machine / Red Oyster Cult - Reaper / X-Ray Eyes / This Could All Be Yours / Manifest Destiny / Keep It Together / New Song # / Demons / Ruby Falls / C’mon / Airport Song / SET TWO / What You Wish For / Barrel Of A Gun / Either Way / Fa Fa / I Spy / Center Of Attention / All The Way Up To Heaven / Happier / So Long / Two Points For Honesty / Rainy Day / ENCORE / Hang On / Come Downstairs And Say Hello / Jesus On The Radio (unplugged)

Full setlist for October 30: SET ONE / Ramona / G Major / The Beginning Of The End / This Could All Be Yours / Demons / Diane / Satellite / The Captain / Bad Bad World / Manifest Destiny / Rocketship / Come Downstairs And Say Hello / SET TWO / What You Wish For / Barrel Of A Gun / Either Way / Fa Fa / I Spy / Center Of Attention / All The Way Up To Heaven / Happier / So Long / Two Points For Honesty / Rainy Day / ENCORE / Hang On / Airport Song / Jesus On The Radio (unplugged)

the Features, Kings of Leon (09.08.09)

the Band: the Features, Kings of Leon
the Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2009
the Venue: Merriweather Post Pavilion (Columbia, MD)

(Photo credit to Zach Vitiello and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/zackvitiello/)

The Features opened, but we totally missed them … traffic getting into Merriweather is such a killer. I like the Features too … bummer.

Thankfully we didn’t miss any part of the main act, the Kings of Leon. These Tennessee boys, consisting of brothers Anthony Caleb Followill (vocals/guitar), Ivan Nathan Followill (drums) and Michael Jared Followill (bass), with their cousin Cameron Matthew Followill (guitar), rocked for two full hours. They focused a lot of this time on the most recent album, Only By the Night. Even so, they played tunes from their whole catalog. This was an amazing show, one of my all time favorites. The whole show was fantastic, but for me, the best songs of the night were Taper Jean Girl, Fans, On Call, and Slow Night, So Long.

Full Setlist: Closer / Crawl / Charmer / Taper Jean Girl / Molly’s Chambers / Red Morning Light / Fans / Revelry / The Bucket / My Party / Four Kicks / Sex on Fire / Notion / Manhattan / On Call / Cold Desert / Slow Night, So Long / ENCORE / Be Somebody / Knocked Up / Use Somebody / Black Thumbnail

“This is the most fun I’ve had at a show in a long time … that means we’re going to come back real soon.” (Caleb’s words to the crowd)

Whispertown 2000, the Breeders (08.21.09)

the Band: Whispertown 2000, the Breeders
the Date: Friday, August 21, 2009
the Venue: Black Cat (DC)

(Photo credit to Derek Denim and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/41695739@N02/)

Whispertown 2000 opened. They were okay.

The Breeders were the main attraction. They are nothing short of amazing. They have always put on a phenomenal show and such was the case at Friday night’s show at the Black Cat. The current members are Kim Deal (guitar, vocals), Kelley Deal (guitar, vocals), Jose Medeles (drums), Mando Lopez (bass), and Cheryl Lyndsey (guitar). Their regular bassist had to leave the tour to witness his girlfriend give birth so the band called in their original bassist Josephine Wiggs to fill in. It was a healthy dose of nostalgic awesomeness!

The Deal twins, et al. played tons of songs from the early material, maybe to be sure that Josephine would be comfortable. Whatever the reason, the crowd, myself included, absolutely loved it. Even though it was an all too brief affair, only about 65 minutes, the show was amazing. My favorites of the evening were Drivin’ on 9 (where Kelley picked up the violin), Divine Hammer, Cannonball, Saints, and Huffer.

Full setlist: No Aloha / Walk it Off / Divine Hammer / New Year / Cannonball / I Just Want to Get Along / Do You Love Me Now? / Happiness Is a Warm Gun / Iris / Fortunately Gone / Hoverin’ / Little Fury / I Am Decided / Night of Joy / Bang On / Huffer / Drivin’ On 9 / Safari / Saints / Tipp City

the Screaming Females, the Dead Weather (07.13.09)

the Band: the Screaming Females, the Dead Weather
the Date: Monday, July 13, 2009
the Venue: 9:30 Club (DC)

The Screaming Females opened. Not my cup of tea … at all.

The Dead Weather was the main attraction. The band is made up of Allison Mosshart (the Kills), Jack White (the White Stripes and the Raconteurs), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age), and Jack Lawrence (the Raconteurs) who while touring together a couple years ago, they just decided what the hell, let’s make another band.

I’ve been blown away by previous shows of the White Stripes and the Raconteurs and I’m a big fan of the Kills and Queens of the Stone Age. This show was just, um … okay. The tunes were from the Dead Weather’s debut album, Horehound. The band put forth lots of energy, but there were only a handful of songs that I really enjoyed. I wouldn’t say a full-on disappointment, but I just didn’t walk away thinking, “Wow, I can’t wait until this band comes back to town.”

Nonetheless, I'm glad NPR recorded the entire show and saved it here:  http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106385053

Full setlist: 60 Feet Tall / Bone House / Outside / So Far From Your Weapon / Cut Like a Buffalo / Forever My Queen (Pentagram cover)/ Rocking Horse / New Pony (Bob Dylan cover)/ No Hassle Night / Will There Be Enough Water / ENCORE / Treat Me Like Your Mother / Child of a Few Hours / Hang You From The Heavens

Now let me drag you by your hair ...

South San Gabriel, One (1) Baptist General, Centro-Matic (11.19.08)

the Band: South San Gabriel, One (1) Baptist General, Centro-Matic
the Date: Wed November 19, 2008
the Venue: Rock and Roll Hotel (DC)

(Photo credit to Ash Crowe and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/ashcrowe/)

South San Gabriel opened. Now, that’s a bit misleading because South San Gabriel is actually an offshoot project of the headliner, Centro-Matic. The difference here being they take four core members of Centro-Matic and add a few additional members to go for a more subdued sound. Their set was well played and a great way to start out the night.

The lead singer from the Baptist Generals, a small indie band from Centro-Matic’s hometown of Denton, Tex-ass, played solo acoustic next. Get it? He was just One (1) Baptist General. Ha! Anyways, I don’t know much about the Baptist Generals, but I like what I heard.

(Photo credit to Ash Crowe and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/ashcrowe/)

Centro-Matic took to the stage around 10:30 and played a full hour and a half. The band consists of Will Johnson (lead vocals, guitar), Scott Danbom (vocals, violin, keyboards, bass), Mark Hedman (bass, guitar), and Matt Pence (drums). These guys have been making killer music for some twelve years and they played killer music tonight.

This was probably the best Centro-Matic show I’ve seen. Will and the band were in good spirits and kept referring to their joy over the recent Obama win. Ahhh, another reason I love these guys. I feel like they played just about all of my favorites. They even performed the English Beat’s Save it for Later in their encore that took everyone by surprise and blew most of us away.

Full setlist: Love You Just the Same / Fountains of Fire / Call the Legion in Tonight / Flashes and Cables / Good As Gold / Mighty Midshipmen / The Rat Patrol and DJs / Quality Strange / I, The Kite / Covered Up in Mines / Calling Thermatico / Saving a Free Seat / Supercar / Blisters May Come / Strahan Has Corralled the Freaks /ENCORE / Save It For Later (The English Beat cover) / ?

just a reminder to all of us

the Acorn, Calexico (11.13.08)

the Band: the Acorn, Calexico
the Date: Thu November 13, 2008
the Venue: 9:30 Club (DC)

(Photo credit to Brandon Wu and his Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/brandonwu/)

The Acorn opened. We missed them, but heard they put on a great show.

Calexico was the headliner. The 9:30 Club was the perfect setting for the group’s intricate music, which has been described as mariachi-punk, sepia-toned indie-rock, or desert twang. However you describe them, they are nothing short of amazing. The Tuscon-based band consists of Joey Burns (vocals, guitars), John Convertino (drums), Paul Niehaus (steel pedal guitar), Jacob Valenzuela (trumpet), Martin Wenk (trumpet), and Volker Zander (bass).

They concentrated on Carried to Dust, Calexico’s most recent release, but they were sure to play many of the fan favorites. Of all the Calexico shows I’ve seen, this was the best. The rest of the crowd seemed to love the show too. There was plenty of dancing and the gritos were howled … Aaahhhuaaaayiiii! My personal highlights of the evening were Roka, Sunken Waltz, Two Silver Trees, El Gatillo (Trigger Revisited), Alone Again Or, and the final song of the evening, Guero Canelo.

Full setlist: Sanchez / Roka / Bend To The Road / Across The Wire / Jesus and Tequila (Minutemen cover) / Writer’s Minor Holiday / Sunken Waltz / House of Valparaiso / Two Silver Trees / El Gatillo (Trigger Revisited) / Stray / Inspiracion / Cruel / Quattro (World Drifts In) / The News About William / Alone Again Or (Love cover) / Fractured Air / ENCORE / Minas de Cobre (For Better Metal) / Victor Jara’s Hands / Guero Canelo

the Whigs, We Are Scientists, Kings of Leon (11.10.08)

the Band: the Whigs, We Are Scientists, Kings of Leon
the Date: Mon November 10, 2008
the Venue: DAR Constitution Hall (DC)

(Photo credit to Shantel Mitchell and her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/faithdesired/)

The Whigs were the first band. I totally missed their show. Bummer! I heard they were great.

Second on the bill was We Are Scientists. Despite the ambivalent response from the typical D.C. stay-in-your seat crowd, they put on a great set. I knew I liked them from seeing them a few years ago at the Black Cat. My favorite was Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt … of course.

(Photo credit to Shantel Mitchell and her Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/people/faithdesired/)

Kings of Leon was the main attraction. The band consists of three brothers, Anthony “Caleb” Followill (vocals, guitar), Ivan “Nathan” Followill, and Michael “Jared” Followill (bass), and a cousin, Cameron “Matthew” Followill (guitar). I’ve seen them many times before and they are one of my favorite Rock ‘n Roll bands. They did not disappoint this night, these Tennessee boys were amazing! They were promoting their latest release, Only by the Night, but their set spanned all four of their albums. My favorites of the night were Closer, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, Use Somebody, On Call, Slow Night, So Long, Knocked Up, and Charmer.

Full setlist for Kings of Leon: Closer / Crawl / My Party / Razz / Molly’s Chambers / Taper Jean Girl / King of the Rodeo / Sex On Fire / Fans / Revelry / Milk / Four Kicks / The Bucket / McFearless / Use Somebody / On Call / Cold Desert / Slow Night, So Long / ENCORE / Knocked Up / Manhattan / Charmer / Black Thumbnail

I ain’t too proud to say that’s how I’m made ...

Golem, the Walkmen (09.06.08)

the Band: Golem, the Walkmen
the Date: Sat September 6, 2008
the Venue: 9:30 Club (DC)

(Photo credit to someone on the internet)

We completely missed Golem. Sorry guys. Unfortunate because we heard they were a band inspired by Eastern European and Jewish klezmer folk music.

We were there for the Walkmen. The Walkmen was formed back in 2000 by three members from Jonathan Fire Eater (Walter Martin (vocals, organ, bass), Paul Maroon (guitar), and Matt Barrick (drums)) and two from the Recoys (Hamilton Leithauser (vocals, guitar) and Peter Bauer (organ, bass)). All of the members grew up together in the Washington, D.C. area and have played in the same bands since the fifth grade! Walter and Hamilton are cousins too.

Anyways, Hamilton and the boys played a great show to this large, hometown crowd. It was a solid collection of songs that mixed classics with some of the newer tunes off of their recent release, You & Me. My favorites of the evening included What’s in It for Me?, Wake Up, Louisiana, The Rat, Little House of Savages, Long Time Ahead of Us, and In the New Year (where Hamilton's voice crescendoed into a scream in the chorus). It was just an amazing performance from a band that I love. We even had a surprise guest appearance from Peter’s little boy. Awwwww.

Full setlist: New Country / On the Water / In the New Year / Canadian Girls / Thinking of a Dream I Had / Wake Up / Long Time Ahead of Us / Donde Esta la Playa / All Hands and the Cook / Red Moon / The Rat / What’s in It for Me? / I Lost You / Louisiana / ENCORE / Four Provinces / Little House of Savages

If you don’t like it, Won’t you tell me? ...
